FROM THE MOUTH OF THE EMPEROR

Day Six Bartolome and Sombrero Chino

We had a very early wake up call (5:45 am) in order to be able to catch the sunrise on the top of Bartolome. It is a very small volcanic island and one of the smallest of the Galapagos. No vegetation to speak of but beautiful natural lava flow formations and rocks.

Day five Santa Cruz and Daphne Major

This was a bit of a lazy day for our exploration. We headed into Santa Cruz, a small town with a population of a 7,000. Only 30,000 people live on the entire Galapagos chain. It also is home to our favorite naturalist, Chelso. He is so passionate about the conservation and protection of the Galapagos Islands.

Day four - Santa Cruz

Last night after a short cruise we docked at Floreana. Floreana is a peaceful, rolling island dotted with numerous extinct volcanic cones amidst a variety of scrubby vegetation. Its colorful human history goes back to almost two centuries and, at times, verges on the bizarre: from marooned whalers to prisoners and colonists, and from a toothless dentist to a self-proclaimed empress.

Day Three - Espanola

Life on the Endeavor is relaxed with all the comforts of home. One exception is the fact that space is at a premium. It holds about 90 passengers and all cabins have nice bathrooms but are made for small humans. I met John after the first day. He is from Minnesota and looks like an NFL line man. He told me that he is only able to wash his body one side at a time! This is a beautiful ship that was built 1966 in Germany.

Day 2 - San Cristobal

We sailed yesterday from Baquerizo Moreno…a town of over 8,000 inhabitants. There are only 30,000 people living on the Galapagos. Our destination today is San Cristobal!
